Introducing...
Joyce Baughn
Location: Abilene, Texas
Date of Amputation/Cause: I became a bilateral below
elbow on the last day of 1st grade when I crawled under a train and
then had it start up while I was still under it.
Prosthesis: I had 2 pair of prostheses after losing my
hands, a Dorrence split hook and another style I’ve never seen since.
I wore the prostheses from the time I got up until I went to bed because
Mother was told she must make me do so. I
functioned okay for a 7 and 8 year old kid, none of us could do much then!
They were hot, heavy, and uncomfortable but I wore them.
Then one glorious summer day, the cable broke!
There were and are no prosthetists in Sweetwater, Texas,
so I got to go without them while my parents tried to
figure out what to do. I very
quickly was able to do everything and more with my arms that I could do with
the hooks so the hooks were never repaired.
I was much more comfortable and, best of all, I had my sense of touch
back. For me, the non-prosthetic
option is the only one that makes sense
Amp Events Attended: Amputee Coalition of
America organizational meeting, 1986; One Arm Dove Hunt, most years since 1990;

1938 and am the widow of Bill Baughn. We
had no children, except for 2 four legged models: BeBe and Angel, sweet
Pomeranians who are 9 years old. I am retired from Bank of American where
I was technical support for customers using online banking and bill payment.
